Requests for activations

To connect your computer to the network of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, you will need an IP address, a free network socket and a UTP cable. Since 01/02/2017 you don’t need a “Interne Betalingsopdracht” anymore, all requests can be sent directly to the Helpdesk (either by e-mail or by the Online Question Form).

Most requests are free of charge since 01/02/2017. For very significant or excessive requests, we might decide to charge you a fee. This will be communicated in advance so you can still modify your request.

For any request we need a “reasonable amount of time”. Depending on the type of request and the current workload, this can vary. As a rule of thumb we can fulfill most requests within a week [*]. This is true as well for urgent/temporary requests (seminars, congresses, infodays,…): we are very happy to solve your problem, but you need to give us time to do so.

Requests for IP addresses

New IP-addresses are free of charge within reasonable limits [*].

New IP-adresses get a “client only” profile in the firewall by default. This means you can make all normal connections to the internet, but your device will be reachable from outside the VUB. If you need your device to be reachable from outside the VUB network, please communicate which protocols/ports/services need to be reachable.

Please use the following communication in your message to the helpdesk:

IP address <department abbreviation> <user name> <room> <Tel>
<desired firewall profile>
  • <department abbreviation> will be used to name your device, like eg DFPC01, MARCOMPC1, …
  • <user name> is the name of the user of the device, or of a person in the department who is responsible for keeping track of which IP address is used by whom
  • the <room> where the device will be used
  • <Tel> of the user or the department responsible
  • <desired firewall profile> in case you want to have certain services available to devices outside of the VUB network. The default firewall profile is “client only”

Typical requests

2x IP address DF Jan Van de Modaele 6M405 T2010
IP address Marcom JvdModael PL9 T2010 with remote desktop
IP address MINF Jan vd Modaele Jette-6D104 T2010 with http and https

Activations of network sockets

The activation of new network sockets is free of charge within reasonable limits [*].

New network sockets are configured in speeds up to 100mbit by default.

Please use the following communication in your message to the helpdesk:

activation <campus/building> <network socket code> <IP address/subnet>
  • <campus/building> eg Oef-B, Oef-M, Jette-D, IIHE, PL9, PL5, U-residence, …
  • <network socket code> The network socket is the socket where you will plug in your network cable. Above every socket there should be a label with a code, which is typically structured like this: <room>/<extra code>/<socket number> eg 6M504/10/20
  • <IP address/subnet> If you already have an IP address or know which subnet (the third number in your IP address = the X in 134.184.X.Y) will be used, we can preconfigure the network socket.

Where possible, it is advised that each device is connected to its own network socket. If you use a switch or hun to share a connection, we recommend to ask for the activation of extra network sockets.

Typical requests

Activation Oef-M 8M870/15/22 subnet 13
3 Activations PL9 pl95/20/3,5,7 subnet 23
4 Activations Jette 6D102/12/14-17 subnet 205

UTP Network cables

Between your network socket and your computer you will need a UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cable. These cables are available in the following lengths: 1,2,3,5,10,15m.

These cables are free of charge within reasonable limits [*].

Please use the following communication in your message to the helpdesk:

1x UTP <length>

If you want to use a cable that you did not request from VUBnet, this should comply at least with the CAT5E standard and be of the Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) type.

Typical requests

2x UTP 1m
1x UTP 5m

[*] For significant or excessive requests, we might decide to charge you a fee which will be related to the real cost. This will be communicated in advance so you can still modify your request.
